Abstract

Speech is the most natural and fast communication way for human beings. However, when people’s auditory and articulation systems have problems due to diseases (such as sensory nerve hearing loss, stroke, cerebral palsy, etc.), these will directly affect the ability of speech transmission. Many assistive devices, such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and communication boards, are used to help those people to improve their communication capability, currently; however, it still has room for improvement. In this talk, I am going to show how could an efficient signal processing method with AI technology benefit the users who use hearing and communication assistive devices. More specifically, we develop several speech signal processing architectures with AI technology to help users have better communication benefits. The experiment results showed that the proposed algorithm has the potential to implement in assistive devices for helping users communicate well in the future.

Ying-Hui Lai received a Ph.D. degree in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, National Yang-Ming University in 2013. From 2010 to 2012, he was an R&D engineer in the Aescu technology Inc. During this period, he developed eight hearing aid products, and those products were launched on the market successfully. From October 2013 to January 2015, he worked as a post-doctoral in Academia Sinica (Research Center for Information Technology Innovation) and the research interests focused on the topic of hearing assistive devices, voice conversion, noise cancellation algorithms, and artificial intelligence, respectively. In 2016, he joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Yuan Ze University, Taiwan. Currently, Dr. Lai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. His research interests include hearing and communication assistive devices, speech signal processing, bio-signal processing, and AI technology, etc. From 2013 to date, Dr. Lai has accumulated more than 60 internal academic journals and conference papers, obtained 4 patents, and completed 5 industry-university research projects. In addition, Dr. Lai received recognition of the 15th, 16th and 17th National Innovation Awards (國家新創獎), and won 4 awards and 3 academic research excellence awards in the academic research group, respectively. Recently, with the joint efforts of laboratory graduate students, he won gold medals and special awards in the 2019 South Korea WiC World Innovation and Invention Competition, the 2020 AI China Science and Technology Agency Competition, and the Merry electroacoustic thesis award-Bronze Award (美律電聲論文獎-銅質獎). With the past research experience, he will continue to involve in related research work on listening and language science, hearing and communication aids, speech and physiological signal processing.
