Application of Medical Internet of Things in Digital Healthcare

Abstract

The Micro and Nano Sensing Technology Lab (MANST) brings over a decade of research and development experience in physical sensors, biosensors, and smart healthcare.

Physical Sensors: We're spearheading transformative advancements in flexible sensors, heralding a new era in medical technology. The silver nanocomposite strain sensor is a key example, providing precise pulmonary function measurements for COPD patients and presenting a potential replacement for traditional bulky equipment. Our ionic gel strain sensor, recognized for its biocompatibility, adhesiveness, and strain-sensing ability, shows promising applications in pre-surgical skin tension measurements, thus potentially enhancing surgical outcomes. Moreover, by integrating a polymer nanocomposite pressure sensor with a bending sensor, we've developed a wearable device for meticulous spasticity evaluation, promising to augment diagnostic accuracy in patient care.

Biosensors: Parallel to our work in physical sensors, our biosensors research team is pioneering early disease detection, specifically targeting chronic kidney disease (CKD) and bladder cancer. Utilizing electrochemistry and nano-material interactions, we've engineered sensors to detect critical biomarkers: Albumin and Creatinine for CKD, and FGFR3 and APO-A1 for bladder cancer. These innovative tools are geared towards facilitating early disease detection, thereby holding promise to significantly improve patient outcomes for these prevalent conditions in Taiwan.

Smart Healthcare: We're defining our team's work in the realm of smart healthcare through pioneering advancements in IoT technology for medical applications. One of our key projects involves a biofeedback device for post-surgical pain management, which collects and analyzes physiological data to provide effective pain relief strategies. Additionally, we've developed an innovative system for dental model tracking, revolutionizing dental practices by ensuring precision and improving efficiency. Lastly, we've ventured into digital health with an app dedicated to tracking migraines, aiming to refine this further to predict migraine attacks. Our comprehensive approach signifies a commitment to reshaping healthcare across preventive, curative, and rehabilitative domains.

Cheng-Hsin Chuang, Ph.D.

Prof. Cheng-Hsin Chuang serves as the chair at the Institute of Medical Science and Technology at National Sun Yat-sen University, leading the Micro and Nano Sensing Technology (MANST) lab. His two-decade-long interdisciplinary research integrates material engineering, AIoT, smart sensing, and more. Prof. Chuang's innovations include nanomaterial-based biosensors for chronic disease testing, wearable sensors, and a stretchable tactile sensor. The MANST lab, under his direction, has furthered this field, creating point-of-care testing and wearable technologies. He has published over 250 papers, holds 40 patents, and received various awards, including the 2008 IEEE NEMS Best Conference Paper, emphasizing his immense contribution to the domain.
