Statement of Research Expertise

My research interests and expertise are the structural design of functional nanoporous materials forbiomedical applications. Since I started my own career in NTU in 2008, I have focused on the synthesis and functionalization of mesoporous inorganic (silica, titania, gold, iron oxide, hydroxyapatite, etc.) and organic (alginate and chitosan) nanocomposites for intracellular drug delivery of bladder and liver cancers, controlled release of glaucoma, and bone healing. These works were summarized at my recent paper published in Adv. Mater. (2020, 1907035). Currently, I also start working on the design and synthesis of nanoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for various kinds of biomedical applications. For examples, water-based synthesis of MOFs for enzyme immobilization published in JACS (2015, 137(13), 4276-4279 and 2017, 139(19), 6530-6533) first demonstrates size-selective sheltering of catalase in biocatalysis application, conducting MOFs for biosensing of dopamine published in Adv. Sci. (2017, 4, 1700261) show an enhanced sensitivity and selectivity toward dopamine, Fe-based MOF for photothermal therapy published in ACS AMI (2021, 13(44), 52092-52105) demonstrates a monocyte and gold nanorods co-functionalized MOF can show an excellent antitumor efficacy from the histology of tumor tissues, survival rates, and bioluminescence imaging. The goal of my research is to develop a platform including various kinds of nanoporous biomaterials for both fundamental investigations of challenging problems and practical applications of biomaterials-based devices. I believe that I have an excellent publication track record with 240 peer-reviewed publications, 17700 times citation, and a H-index of 69. In addition, my ability to develop innovative ideas and commercialize research is evidenced by eight fully authorized patents and one technology transfer. For example, one of the technology developed at his laboratory“Functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles for tooth bleaching”, is protected by a patent (Patent No.: I461216), Authorization Duration: 2014/11/21~2030/12/08. This patent has been successfully licensed to a Taiwanese company (Wokan Co., Ltd.).
